Sorry for the delay - three day headache. I was using the browser on my phone actually. I deleted the app months ago because I couldn't find my way around it. Very strange.

Hi Kathy

Love your video!

looking forward to the next Kathy's Corner.

A discussion about different ways of handling the scans of backs of photos, and linking them to the correct front scan, would be very welcome, please.

PS. sorry if you got a message request from me - I still don't play well with Substack but I am trying really hard with Barbara's help!

Great topic Ann, thanks so much. No worries about the message request - we are all learning Substack

A quick follow-up to our front and back scan linking discussion, following a Facebook thread with Adam Pratt from Chaos to Memories:

Copying a front scan and its back scan into a single JPEG file will degrade the images slightly, but probably not noticeably so long as only saved once and the highest quality setting is used. (Multiple saves of JPEG files results in noticeable loss of image quality due to this file format using lossy compression.)

Copying a front scan and its back scan into a multipage TIFF file is not recommended because viewing support is not widespread for this file format.

Using the Stack option in Adobe Lightroom would work within Lightroom, but stacks cannot be exported from Lightroom, so this organisation could not be shared easily.

Adam suggested creating a custom Print preset of two side-by-side photos and then “print” this layout to a new JPEG file.

Thanks Kathy and Barbara and the Community for a brilliant Kathy's Corner.

Really good to have time to explore an aspect of photo organising in more depth.

Thanks for discussing and answering my question (and for the opportunity to 'show off' my latest junk yard find).

Idea for a future Corner...adding metadata to photos.

Great idea! I love demystifying metadata too. Far too often it’s talked about as if it’s an arcane file formatting issue. Starting with context and the many ways to connect information about a thing makes it so much more relatable.

Metadata is FAB!

Using metadata means you don't have to worry about descriptive and often overly long filenames, and you don't need to organise photos - they can just be stored in one folder and accessed using a search, rather than having to browse through a complicated nested folder structure.

Great point @Annlarkham with new search capabilities the days of folder structures are waning

@Kathy and @projectkin I think I will have to do this on my computer. On my phone it takes me to the App Store 🤦🏼.

Unfortunately, yes, I'm afraid so, Marci. You're doing nothing wrong. It appears they've simply locked out "chat" from the web version on mobile.

I can browse on the web with one identity (@projectkin) then when i tap on chat it takes me to the app where I'm using my @barbaratien identity.

You're not the first person to ask this question, by the way. I salute you for being cautious and recognizing exactly what you'd done.

By the way, at-notifications don't work in comments. Oddly, they do work in both Notes and Chat. I'm thinking we need a "Nerd's Nook" 😉.

Thank you Barbara.

Very strange, since you are using the app to see the post! Hoping @projectkin jumps in to help us out

When I touch the “Ask Kathy” button I get “Open the App to chat with your friends”. The app is confusing for me. Any suggestions for a work around?

👋 hey there Marci. The "Chat" function only works when you're logged in. You can be logged in either on the web OR from the app where it's automatic, keyed to the address used in the app store (such as the Apple ID in iPhone.)

Here's where it gets tricky. It turns out that on a mobile device they FORCE you to use the app to access chat, even if you don't want to. Sorry about that, I'd honestly not realized that. I just reported it to the support team who cheerfully told me it worked, until I tried it. I've asked them to log it as a bug. It could be this is something that's changed recently, I don't know.

The workarounds are to view the chat from a desktop using a browser, or use the app.

This link should always take you to the projectkin.org chat: https://substack.com/chat/2058500 ... except, it appears on mobile unless you open the app.
