Changes in the social media landscape have created an opportunity for Projectkin to narrow its focus on the most generous genealogy communities. Here’s what’s changing.
I appreciate your summing up the changing social media landscape.
I find there are some excellent communities at Facebook and I appreciate the generosity of members of those communities in sharing information and answering queries.
Man, I admire your ability to look ahead at technology and share what you see with the rest of us. Thanks! I’d like to say I’ll act on your wisdom, but I find social media so exhausting. Maybe I’m doing it wrong? I recognize the value, but can’t seem to push myself to add it to my daily routine.
Hey, in a way, I've done this for a living since the late ’80s when we were chatting up customers on Usenet and AppleLink. By the time our modern social media came out, I was already avoiding it to give my kids clearance or just using it as part of my mission for my startups to learn about the market or competitors. I get to be myself AND represent Projectkin these days, so a quick read morning and night is like reading the physical paper—a routine I miss.
Well, now, how 😎 is that? First, it's hard to believe Ensign Crusher is over 50, but that aside, here's his blog post on the topic of leaving Facebook. Gotta love it. WordPress. Go figure. wilwheaton.net/2025/01/smash-that-subscribe-button
With respect to Meta and privacy, the folks at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF.org) have been working on this for a long time. I've found this article helpful because it includes specific guidance for turning Facebook's tracking functions off: eff.org/deeplinks/2025/01/mad-meta-dont-let-them-collect-and-monetize-your-personal-data. For the general case, EFF's Privacy Badger has a few neat tricks: eff.org/deeplinks/2025/03/online-tracking-out-control-privacy-badger-can-help-you-fight-back. Keep in mind, though, that this is an ongoing game of whack-a-mole. Stay safe out there.

I will follow you wherever you go - considering this myself
🥹Thank you so much. That means the world to me.
You are in great company. Will Wheaton left FB today too.
