Italian winemaker John Gemello was struggling to make ends meet in the early 1900s. Three out of four years, harsh winters would wipe out his Peidmont crops, forcing him to start over. Friends of his immigrated to California. They’d write him letters. “You’re making 10 cents a day. We’re making a dollar a day here. Come join us.” In December 1912, he set sail for New York, then caught a train to San Jose, California.
