Mom grew up during WWII when everything was rationed, meat, butter, sugar, and especially silk, which the boys on the front needed for parachutes. So when she dressed up, of course there was no silk for stockings. But to remain stylish, she drew a back line in back of her legs so it looked like a stocking seam. Never underestimate a poor country girl \-)
