Projectkin Events in the Weeks Ahead: New Programs & Series to Inspire You
In building a community, you can't skip over human connections. At Projectkin, it's events that bring us together in conversation, shared experiences, and a common goal — sharing our stories.
Though I shared our events calendar just a few weeks ago, we’ve had so many new events come in that I thought I should update it for you.
All About That Place #AATP24
You’ve probably already heard about our involvement with the incredible series “All About That Place” organized by the Society of Genealogists, the Society for One-Place Studies, the British Association for Local History, and Genealogy Stories. Out of a fascination with the program last year and a desire to help promote one-place studies,1 we volunteered to sponsor the “Pacific Edition” of the program with five live, one-hour events across five of the ten series days. You can read about the series here.
All programs will be recorded and posted to the #AATP24 Society of Genealogists’ YouTube playlist and Facebook group. Don’t miss my recording scheduled for release at 8 PM BST on day 10, Sunday, October 6th, “Using Projects to Tell Stories About That Place.” It’s the very last recording of the series but I’ll be there to chat it up on YouTube and Facebook.
Like all of these “Pacific Edition” program recordings, my program and the Projectkin AATP Members’ Corner posts will also be posted to our special section, Projectkin.org/AATP24.
Don’t miss next week’s program with Projectkin friend Simon Davies of WeAre.xyz, who will give us a little talk about the study of place titled “Why Study One Place.”
October Firsts
AATP isn’t our only first in October. On October 10th, after the All About That Place series concludes, Rhonda Lauritzen will join us for “The Curious Call of Ancestral Places.” It’s a perfect touch for the spooky month of October and allows us to incorporate places into new projects.
Many of you will recognize Rhonda for her outstanding RootsTech talks and ongoing writers’ community courses and programs for Evalogue Life. This will be her first event for the
. I hope you can join me in welcoming her to the community. The following week,
, of the Juvenile Geriatric Newsletter, will join us for the first in her six-part series, “Forget-me-not: How We Memorialise,” will be a live interview with Professor Gordon Coonfield of Communication at Villanova University, and Kensington Remembers in the American state of Pennsylvania. This fabulous series explores how we memorialize and preserve the stories of loved ones we’ve lost.I’m thrilled to have Jane back after her blockbuster theater programs, “Lost in Shanghai” and “Difficult Conversations,” (don’t miss her follow-up interview with Tim Dean on her newsletter.) You may also have seen her in the short “taster” workshop she did for Projectkin in May, “Beginning, Middle and End.”
Ongoing Favorites
With a few adjustments, we’ve managed to introduce these new programs without compromising the schedules for our ongoing favorites, including:
She joins us in the “place” theme with her program on Thursday, September 26th, when she’ll discuss the challenges of connecting places to photos. (I’ve lost hours trying to figure out where a photo was taken, haven’t you?) In October, her program will be scheduled a week later than usual to capture the spooky fun of Halloween on October 31st. Join us, won’t you?Kathy is always carefully includes thoughtful resources each month — something that has made her programs some of our most popular. Explore the Kathy’s Corner archive here.
Our list wouldn’t be complete without Emma Cox’s delightful storytelling in her monthly program, “Emma Explores…Stories, Mysteries and Fame.” Emma will be skipping her September program to enjoy a well-deserved holiday but will be back on October 17th with more stories — all thoughtfully combined with the techniques of professional genealogists.
But wait, there’s more!
Finally, there are our Project Festivals. We shared this idea back in March when we realized we needed a category to “brainstorm” new project ideas with fellow travelers on the genealogy journey. More about the program idea in this original post, “Announcing ‘Project Festivals.’” Our first session in July was great fun; watch the recording here as
, , and shared their ideas. It’s fun, it’s easy.Instead of scheduling these for set dates, we’ll plan them when we can muster three speakers to share ideas. Our calendar has been so busy it’s been hard to squeeze these in. Use this new meeting poll to compare your own schedule to available times.
Though I don’t currently have any “Project Festival” events scheduled, several of you have asked about them. Let’s not let it slide until next year.
I also have a few more slots open for “Project Recipe” ideas. Surely you have a few ideas underway for the holidays. Why not share them with the community?
Have a proposal for a new type of event? Sure! Let’s hear it.
As with all Projectkin programs, these recordings, resources, and recipes are offered free to Projectkin members. Your participation helps spread the word and invites others to share their ideas, too. Feel free to share this email with friends you think might be interested.
In small “buy-me-a-coffee” considerations, member contributions support our community's modest operational expenses. Many thanks to those of you who’ve already donated so often and so generously.
“OPS,” if you’re talking to the cool kids, 😎
